Comparing products by canister price is the most common mistake in budget planning. Application rates of different products differ several-fold, so only a per-hectare calculation shows the real cost.
A simple formula
Treatment cost, UAH/ha = product rate (L/ha or kg/ha) × price per L (kg). If the tank mix has several components (herbicide, adjuvant, micronutrient), add up the cost of all of them.
Example
Illustrative figures. Product A costs 400 UAH/L at a rate of 1.0 L/ha — the treatment costs 400 UAH/ha. Product B is more expensive at 700 UAH/L, but the rate is 0.5 L/ha — the treatment costs 350 UAH/ha. So the 'more expensive' product is actually better value.
What else to consider
- An adjuvant, if the label recommends one.
- Number of applications: sometimes one application of a combination product is cheaper than two separate ones.
- Efficacy and duration of action — a repeat application eats up all the savings.
- Machinery, fuel and labour costs — for comparing options with a different number of passes.
Quantity for the whole area
Quantity = rate × area. For example, 0.5 L/ha × 200 ha = 100 L. Round up to whole canisters and allow a small reserve.
