Weeds compete with the crop for moisture, nutrients and light. With heavy infestation, yield losses can reach 20–50%, and even more in dry years. Weeds also complicate harvesting and reduce grain quality. Herbicides are the fastest and most reliable way to clean up a field.

Types of herbicides

  • Non-selective — kill all vegetation; used before sowing, after harvest, on fallow and on non-agricultural land.
  • Selective — control specific weeds directly in the crop.
  • Pre-emergence (soil-applied) — applied before or immediately after sowing and prevent weed germination.
  • Post-emergence systemic — penetrate the plant and kill the weed together with its roots.
  • Contact — affect only the parts of the plant the spray solution reaches.

How to choose a herbicide

Consider the crop, its growth stage, the weed species and the weather. To extend protection, pre- and post-emergence products are combined, and to prevent resistance, active ingredients with different modes of action are rotated.
